The ECL exam at ETALL

The ECL is an international German language examination, recognised by the Germans. At ETALL everything takes place under official conditions: the papers are written in Europe, sat at ETALL Mbalngong, and then sent back to Europe for marking. On the day of the exam, candidates sit under tight security, with the police present throughout and surveillance cameras linked to the ECL headquarters in Pécs.

The ECL can now be taken in Douala

From the November 2026 session onwards, you choose the city where you sit the exam: Yaoundé or Douala.

Free preparation for the first to enrol

To mark the launch, the first candidates to enrol and pay their examination fee at ETALL Kotto — at the end of the tarred road, Mbangué, in Douala — from 4 September 2026 receive the preparation course free of charge: the first 100 at B1 and B2, the first 20 at A2 and C1.

Two levels in the same session

You may now sit two different levels within a single session, without first having to pass the level below. You choose which ones.

A valid identity document, no exceptions

The ECL can only be sat with a national identity card or a valid passport. No other document is accepted: keep yours somewhere safe.

Registration for the November 2026 session

Registration at the counter opens on Friday 4 September. Online registration stays open until 16 September 2026. Only register online if you are ready to identify yourself and confirm your application within that time.

Enrol for the full exam, or for the modules of your choice

With the modular system, you enrol either for the full exam or for whichever combination of modules suits you — reading, writing, listening, speaking. Choose, at the time of enrolment, every module you intend to sit during the open session.

Six sessions a year

The ECL exam takes place every two months from February onwards, that is six sessions a year: there is no long wait before you can try your luck.

No lower level required

The ECL does not ask for the certificate of the level below: you may sit B1 directly without holding A2, or B2 without holding B1. You enter at the level that matches what you can do.

The four modules

The exam assesses four skills: Lesen (reading), Schreiben (writing), Hören (listening) and Sprechen (speaking). To pass, you must succeed in all four modules with at least 60% in each.

  • Lesen reading
  • Schreiben writing
  • Hören listening
  • Sprechen speaking

How do you become a candidate?

  1. 1° Register online.
  2. 2° Come to the centre with your file: the photocopy and the original of your identity card or of your valid passport, together with the letter of commitment for the current session, read and signed three times by the candidate.
  3. 3° Wait for ETALL's go-ahead. You pay the examination fee at the bank only once your file has been approved.
  4. 4° Come back to ETALL with the photocopy and the original of the bank receipt: your application is then finally confirmed.
  5. 5° At the latest two weeks before the exam, you receive your examination programme by e-mail: the day, the examination centre, the room and the time.
